Is there anything more Australian than a Vegemite sandwich? How many times have you tried to convince a non-Aussie of the deliciousness of our yeasty spread only to have them turn up their nose when you put a piece of toast on their breakfast plate?

We thought we’d open up a can of worms/jar of dark brown spread and ask you this:

Vegemite or Promite? If it’s the later, don’t be afraid to come out of the pantry and tell us why!

Sugar?
It’s hard to imagine that such a salty spread would contain any type of sugar but when it comes to Vegemite and Promite – the latter is definitely a less healthy option.

Vegemite has 2.2g of sugar per 100g
Promite has 18g of sugar per 100g

It’s important to note that a single serve of Promite is less than a quarter of a teaspoon of sugar so a smear or two isn’t going to be a problem.

For two spreads that look and taste quite similar – there are differences when it comes to their ingredients.

Promite lists both sugar and glucose syrup in its ingredients. In Vegemite – the sweetness comes from malt extract which is the same grain-based sweetener used in the brewing of beer.
